TYPOLOGY: PAINT BOOTH and PREPARATION BOOTH WITHOUT PIT
The facility was intended to allow the customer to repair and maintenance work in the subway cars so installation should be underground.
This requires providing a solution for air recirculation control all kinds of contamination during painting processes inside the tunnel.
The target was to facilitate the repairs of the metro coaches in an open and underground “dépôt”.
It was necessary to solve the air recycling problem and to control any spreading of toxic/contaminating substances through other working spaces.

Very ambitious project ordered to ASTRA by the spanish railway manufacturer CAF as they have found any satisfying solutions on the market for the installation at 36 mts underground of a 23 x 5 x 5.6 mts paint booth without air intake pipes and air exhaust pipes , and without conventional heating system (burners) and a 23 x 5 x 5.6 mts preparation booth with the same constraints.
The success of this operation rely mainly in the use of an unconventional heating system, a control of all contaminating substances during any work phase and without expansion through the adjacent working areas, an overall acoustical insulation to avoid echoes effect in the tunnel, and an added ozone air recycling system for the protection of the workers and to avoid solvents expansion inside the tunnel.
With adjustable doors to the profile of the coaches it has been possible to reduce the working cycle because it was not necessary anymore to unlock the coaches.
The prohibition of using fuel or gas in the underground “dépôt” led ASTRA to install electrical batteries capable of provided 40º C for the baking phase and for reducing humidity.
